Hospitality and Tourism Management in Thailand

            As The Commission on Higher Education, Thailand, and the nation secretariat of UMAP Thailand, kindly provide UMAP Scholarship Thailand 2008 for 20 students including us; five Thai students, we got the best opportunity to attend the program of The Hospitality and Tourism Management in Thailand which hold on 16 June-11 July 2008 <> at Silpakorn University and Dhurakij Bundit University. The program was separated into two parts as per the following discussion:

The first part of the course was tourism management in Thailand, which was supported by Silpakorn University. We learned how to management Thailandtourism on important and interesting topics. They consist of the evolutions of the tourism industry in Thailand, major tourist destinations, and cultural centers and historical attractions. The main objective of tourism management program emphasized in sustainable and community-based tourism management. UMAP’s Project separated in several lectures such as Tourism in Thailand, Thailand’s World Heritage sites, cultural and Thai society, eco-tourism, cultural tourism, home stay, and tourism marketing.

The second part of the course was hospitality management in Thailand, which was arranged by Dhurakij Bundit University. There were interesting lectures such as Thai hospitality industry, hotel management, crisis management in hospitality, food and culture, Thai cookery, and alcoholic beverage in Thailand. Every topic emphasized on the effective management of hotels and restaurants, practical techniques for control produces, staff productivity, business revenues, and learning identify of Thai cuisine.

The Hospitality and Tourism Management course aims to give us knowledge and experiences in hospitality and tourism management in Thailand. We gain a lot of knowledge in both theory and practice in hotel and tourism industry.

The advantages of the program are:

-  Experiences on international and local service industries

-  Studying in growth of the hospitality and tourism industry in Thailand

-  Learn on sustainable and community-based of tourism management practices in Thailand

-  Understand modern hotel and restaurant management practices

-  Learn on method in hospitality and tourism development

-  Understand Thai society and culture

-  Learn and exchange with exchange students about language and culture

        On behalf of Thai students would like to thank University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific <>, The Commission on Higher Education <>, Thailand, Silpakorn and Dhurakij Bundit University for providing us with the great program and looking after us all over duration in the program. We appreciated Sripatum University. Professors for helping us get this scholarship.

The Sustainable Tourism Management

Tourism is a business which has been popular. There is in every country. Nowadays tourism industry is important for economy and development of every country because it is a good way to lead main income to the country including Thailand. Tourism takes place from human behavior in interest on cultural and natural resource, so attractions are always cultural and natural area. The factors that stimulate people to take a trip are identity of the attractions. Tourism is influential and important factor to lead revenue to the country, so good tourism management is also important for assistant in the right way. The tourism management has to concern on sustainable tourism as following discussion:

          Tour operator could manage tourism sustainably by using four factors. The first factor of sustainable tourism management is knowledge in economy and society. If we know on economic direction, it can tell us how tourism business is going on such as percentage of tourism jobs, wages, marketing, promotion costs, and tourism investment. For example, Thailand promotes domestic tourism inside country because domestic tourism leads income to get into the country such as promotion costs/wages for domestic people and leading for investment of foreigners who would like to open business in the country. For society, sustainable tourism management has to concern in impaction for society such as number of resident, amount of crime, and average length of stay. For example, there are lots of people who are from abroad stay at area of attractions in Thailand. It makes the attractions are not enough for stay and take place problem in uncomfortable resident.

          Moreover, factor of sustainable tourism management is good management system. It consists of tourists, attractions, transportation, accommodation, and service. Sustainable tourism need to think about amount of tourists because tour guide can take care all tourists for tourists would not do something wrong to attractions. For example, when there are 10 tourists who travel in Wat Chai Watthanaram should be taken care all, nobody damages it. Attraction place, both tour operator and people who live nearby the attraction should corporate together for sustainable attraction improvement and still has identity. For transportation, accommodation, and service should pay attention for tourist’s convenience and avoidance environmental effect in society.

          In addition, cultural and natural resource is factor for sustainable tourism management. The cultural resource is resource which can attract tourist’s interest highly. Sustainable tourism management needs to concern how to take identity or original tradition to use for extreme benefits and keeping for being sustainability because it leads to be stable in tourism. For example, there is home stay in Nakornsawan  Province that bring the way of Thai life to be prominent point for attract tourists such as Thai massage, food, and routine of work. It causes both the community and tourism can aid and support each other. Every attraction is from natural resource, so it means natural resource is the most important factor that makes tourism business to be going on. Nowadays lots of attractions are affected by no sense of tourists. We should help to develop damaged natural resource to be better by concentration of tourism facilities and tourist activities. For example, Koh Samed in Rayong Province is being developed by cover up it for develop destroyed natural resource as formerly. It will be cover up about two months for development. After then Thailand Tourism Ministry will make new rule in limitation on amount of tourists for easy controlling and improve its natural resource sustainably. It leads benefits for both the community which is in it and tourism industry.

          Furthermore, unless the mention factor is above, tour operator has to use “Ecotourism” to manage tourism sustainably, too. Ecotourism can help us to encourage an understanding of impacts of tourism on the natural, culture and human environment for being the indicator to solve problem in tourism. Sustainable tourism management emphasizes cooperation with community. It causes generate local employment, profitable domestic industry, local transportation, communications, and other basic community infrastructures. We call them that

“Support Each Other”. For example, in Australia, there are lots of tourism businesses that are like ecotourism business. Australia obtains in successful ecotourism because the identities of the country are experience wildlife and natural-based outdoor recreational activities. They can manage balance of natural resource with sustainable tourism management. It causes their stable natural resource and lead lots of revenue to Australia and Australian.

          However, tour operator need to know and understand on tourism impacts for sustainable tourism management. Tourism impacts are in terms of the economy and society. Economic aspects concern issue of employment, balance of payments, and foreign exchange. For example, tourists buy goods and services when they travel. They spend directly to employment, tax revenues, accommodation, food, entertainment, and souvenirs. All of these make cash flow in the country which is an economy’s destination. If we do not understand in tourism impacts, unplanned and mismanaged, it will be beginning to serious economy, social conflict, and environmental pollution. For example, some tour operator does not care about the season of leathery turtles in laying eggs and still takes a trip to disturb them; it will affect them and make its natural resource to wasted balance.

In conclusion, sustainable tourism management of tour operator should manage by knowledge on economy and society, good management system, understanding cultural and natural resource, and ecotourism. All of these are the guide way to assist us to have long sustainable tourism management. We should implant on knowledge and understanding in correct sustainable tourism resource management for next generations. They should know and love the value of cultural and natural resource in tourism, pay attention in society and environment, and learn how to manage sustainable tourism. If we can maintain sustainable tourism, we will have resources for being identity in tourism in the future.

My Opinion on Changes in Hospitality and Tourism Management

With Respect to Ethics and Sustainable Development Consideration

Nowadays Thailand confronts some problem in hospitality and tourism industry such as ignorance to save natural resources and problem in decadent tourist attraction. All of these are big problems which take place from people or entrepreneurs who are benighted and ignore ethics and sustainable development consideration, so in my opinion on changes in hospitality and tourism management

with respect to ethics and sustainable development consideration is a good way to solve above all problems. Both ethics and sustainable development consideration is the important key to change hospitality and tourism management better.

Ethic is a tool to solve environmental problem and try to persuade tourists or the related people realize in environment for decreasing the current problems. If everyone concerns to take ethics for hospitality and tourism management, it can help to solve the problems by helping people to realize and be conscious for no destroy natural resource and helping to maintain long term tourism resource of the world.

Since there has changed in hospitality and tourism management, people who relate with it pay attention to conserve more in natural resources. For example, in the past, there were lots of national parks obtained with problem in trespass public land and forbidden ground of national park, but when there are changes in hospitality and tourism management with respect to ethics, everything is better because they understand and realize advantage in saving the resources, respect natural law, no selfish, and think of common interest more.

For sustainable development consideration that is a big change of hospitality and tourism management is great to protect natural resources. Sustainable development needs to pay attention in tourist management, touring activity, environment, tourist, community in tourist attraction. Using resource sustainable is the principle in hospitality and tourism management for pattern and tourism activity can sustain. The important thing is to be always tourists to travel.

Unless that, the tourist attraction still has traditional resource and identity.

When sustainable development consideration enters to be a change in hospitality and tourism management, it lets us know and be able to use existed resources sufficiently and use efficiently along with keeping up them to use for a long time. For example, tourism management on coral diving by sustainable development consideration, everyone should consider in the importance of coral by not preserve and destroy coral. If everyone holds to sustainable development consideration’s hospitality and tourism management principle by performing the natural law, any tourist attractions will be safe and able to remain with us forever.

In the other hand, if we do not look after about ethics and sustainable development consideration for hospitality and tourism management, we will face with problems such as decadent tourist attraction that is hard to restore, decreasing amount of both Thai and Foreign tourists, and leading to go down of tourism revenue.

For example, Koh Samed which is popular tourist attraction of Rayong province will be closed for adjustment for two months. It causes tourism’s income that is the main revenue of Koh Samed’s people decrease

In conclusion, changes in hospitality and tourism management with respect to ethics and sustainable development consideration, in my opinion, it is a great change that makes tourist attraction to be looked after extremely for solving the current problem that we are confronting, improving heritage of nature for existence, enhancing in conserved tourism, and it can help us to conserve value resource to be with us for always.

How to be successful in English Business Communication

When we want to be successful in English Business Communication, we need to emphasize three main parts. There are English, business, and communication.
The first main part is English. In English part, we need to learn two points. The first point is English. We need to learn about learning skills in English both writing and reading on business and learning on business language focus. We should have skills about business writing such as business news and business letter. For business reading, we should be able to read business document such as business news and business report. The second point is language focusing. It emphasizes the kind of vocabularies and idioms that are used in business for easy to communicate. In doing business, there are a lot of expressions that they are specific language in business communication.
The second main part is on business. For business, we should learn more about business knowledge and negotiation. Business knowledge, we should know about buying, selling, management, administration, and planning. Everything that relates to business is basic knowledge for using in real business communication. Negotiation is something that we do all the time, and it is essential in business. It is learning how to negotiate in business situation. If you can negotiate in right way, it will be easy and your business communication will run smoothly. You will not be in weaker position and you may not lose ground to your competitors.
The last main part is communication. It consists of two things. They are body and culture language. Let’s start the first communication. That is body language. Body language is an important part of communication. If you wish to communicate well, then it makes sense to understand how you use your body to say what you mean. It is a way to help in business communication and help you to understand the other people easier such as facial expression, hand, and eye contact. All of these can help you what they are thinking. Culture language is important no less than body language. Cultural learning is the way a group of people with in a society especially society. When you have to communicate with people, you need to learn their culture. Learning culture, you need to learn through real experience and participation. Culture can separate two cultural styles. Those are eastern and western culture. We should know both of them for adapt in real English business communication
In conclusion, how to be a successful in English Business Communication, there are six ways which bring you to be good English business communicator.
- Learning English skills
- Language focusing
- Learning business
- Negotiation
- Body language
- Cultural language
All of these are the guide way to bring you to succeed in English Business
Communication. The important thing that will have influence for English business communication. You have to try to find experience in them and practice them. Remember! Practice make perfect, when you practice them, you will be effective and successful English Business Communicator.

CONGRATULATION! CONGRATULATION!

There were lots of bouquets which were set through gate. The voice of congratulations was so loudly on 1st November 2007 at Sripatum University. This day was graduation‘s day for thirty-eighth generations‘s Sripatum University. We were assigned from ENG321 for interview new graduates. There were five people who are interviewed by us. They graduated from several faculties such as faculty of Informatics, Engineering, L321iberal Arts, Architecture and Law.

The first graduated person was a man. He studied at the faculty of Informatics. His major was Business Computer. His name is Mr. Kittichai Sittithagoondet. He graduated with GPA 2.80When he was freshman, he was excited. Now he was very happy. He got friends, friendship and knowledge from Sripatum University. His impression is the beautiful fountain that is in front of the university. He had a problem about examination which is difficult for him but I think he could make it through very well. He has no plan to study for master’s degree. He is working on his own business about the camfox program. He would like to tell to brothers and sisters that graduate like him.
The second person studied in the faculty of Engineering, his major was Electrical Engineering. His name is Mr. Kittipong Yamut. He graduated with GPA 3.25. When he studied at the first year, he was afraid of graduation but now he graduated with high GPA and also felt pound of himself. Sripatum University has given him for knowledge to work and study. He impressed about harmony of Sripatum’s students. When he was studying, he did many activities such as staff of his faculty and playing football. He had some problems with his teacher about communication’s mistake. Now he is studying for master’s degree at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in the same major. He would like students of Sripatum to pay attention to study for getting a good job and finding it easily.

The third person is Mr. Ake Samuttiya. He studied in the faculty of Liberal Arts. Major is English Business Communication. He graduated with GPA 2.80. He had a problem about adjusting himself with other people. At first he did not know anyone but he has lots of friends after he graduated. He got society, friends and studying to improve himself. He likes the atmospheres of Sripatum University. He attended many activities such as Sport Day, Lotus Games etc, when he was studying at Sripatum University. He has a plan to study for master’s degree but now he is collecting money. He would like brothers and sisters study hard. Holding group will make successful.

The forth person is Mr. Santipong Sanyen from Faculty of Architecture in GPA 3.10. He told us he was glad and so proud in his first degree. He got lots of things from Sripatum University such as knowledge from faculty and friendship from his true friends. He did lots of activities for faculty of architecture such as being staff and presenter of his faculty.When he met problems in studying or anything, he consulted his adviser. Now, he is an architecture and works at Phuket. He commended to everyone who is studying “ Everyone has to pay attention in studying because it will bring everyone to succeed in life”.
The finally person is Mr. Asadawut Puasombat. He graduated bachelor’s degree from faculty of Law. His GPA is 2.68. He told us he was so proud in himself. Since he has studied in Sripatum University for four years until he graduated. He was impressed in teaching which let him know how to grow up to be good graduate. When he studied in faculty of Law. He did many activities such as staff of faculty and member of volunteer club. Now, he studies in lawyer and works for Land Reform Office as lawyer. Before he would go to take photos with his family, he commended to us including students who are studying at Sripatum University. He told that everyone has to attend to study in collecting knowledge for your bright future.
In addition , it was a great day that everyone has smile on their face. When we saw new graduates were gotten Bachelor’s Degree, we felt impressing because they succeeded in once of their life except they gave blessing for us . They told us that they hope us will be succeed like them and get Bachelor ‘s Degree soon. We feel happy very much and think our congratulation’s day must happen certainly.

My Autobiography

I was born in Nakhon Si Thammarat,on 7 May,1987.When I was born, my parents gave a name to me "Sukanya" that means a good woman and they hope me to be their good daughter,too. There are five people in my family. I have one sister and one brother. My father and mother do small business about buyingand selling rubber latex.
I graduated high school from Satri Thung Song school and studied in English-French.My hobby is collecting postcards and photoes.
Today,I study in Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sripatum university.
My major is English for Business Communication and minor is Chinese.
I plan to obtain my degree and find scholarship to study abroad for Master's Degree in Business Communication. I would like to be a successful interpreter. I hope to work for international company and be able to take care my family getting better.

Business news is an anouncement of important events about buying and selling of goods or services of business company on television, radio ,etc. In running business, company needs to have business news fr communication with customers. According to the question, I agree that business news is important in running business because it helps creating a good image of an organization, informs the information to the public, makes us know how to set the company's policy, and shares opinion in running business as the following discussion:
Firstly, business news is important in runing business because it helps creating a good image of an organization. Good image is an important thing that helps the organization looks good in customers's eyes. If organization can have good or positive business news, it leads to the confidentce of the customers and they will be brand loyalty of the organization. When customers are confident in the company, the organization will gain profit more. For example, Brcez which is the brand of Uniliver company arranged the projects about building Breez's playgrounds to support learning outside classroom for Thai children. It makes Breez can create good image in brand and organization to customers.
Moreover, business news is important in running business because it helps sharing opinion in running business becuase it makes us know the competitors. In running business, company shuold learn what the competitors do for preparing the ways to improve the organization. We can take information in business news to analyze both organization and compettitors in the market, business strategy ,and SWOT which consists of strength,weakness, opportuinty, and threat. They can tell us to know how to run business better. For example, Pepsi declared strategies of this year in newspaper. Pepsi will use strategies in launching two peoducts per one time for comfirm Pepsi always makes new products for target groups.
Furthermore, business is important in running business because it helps making us know how to set the company's policy because the organization can learn from business news about policy, investment, stock exchange, world trade, and planning in running business. When we know information, we can take them to set the guide of company's policy. For example, Interlink company took all information of 2oo7 to set new po;icy of company in 2008. It declared business policy as increasing profit from 950 million baht to be 1080 million baht, expanding new subsidiary, and human resource development.

The Importance of Understanding of the Characteristics of Business Language

Doing business must relate to communication. Most of business has to communicate with colleague, bosses, customers, and other organizations. Writing is a way to communicate in doing business, and business writing needs to learn about business language, so I agree with understanding of the characteristics of business language can help the writer to write for professional and business writing with conciseness, completeness, effectiveness, and positiveness as the following discussion:
Firstly, understanding of the characteristics helps the writers to write with conciseness because conciseness is giving a lot of information clearly in a few words. Using concise words in business writing, you can use conversational language and abbreviations because the time is money in doing business, so conciseness needs to be used appropriate words, writing briefly, but the message has to write completely. For example, when you want to write the word “as soon as possible” in the message, you can replace it by using “ASAP”
Moreover, it helps the writers to write with completeness because it is important in business writing. The readers will understand complete message that included all details. Completeness is writing all the detail asked for a form or other documents. It consists of who, what, where, when, why, and how for the readers can understand and react to message suddenly when they read it. For example, if the business writer wants to invite the reader who is a special customer of company to join in the annual party, the writer should write in this complete message as an example “we would like to invite you to join our annual party at 4 p.m. on February 2, 2008 in Lotus Room of company.” If you write in this way, it is easy to understand for readers and they will be able to respond quickly with the message.
Furthermore, it helps the writers write with effectiveness. In doing business, if you can use and write business message, it will bring success to your business. Effective business writing is the writers have to use courteous, polite, friendly, and sincere words in the tone of writing for the readers feel the writers are honored in them. Method in business writing by using effectiveness are using personal terms, active voice in sentences, signal words, expression in the message ,etc. For example, instead you want to write, “I am waiting for doing business with you”. It should be better if you use this word, “we look forward to having the opportunity of doing business with you”.
In addition, it helps the writers write with positive ness. It will convey goodwill and willingness to serve the customers. If you use the negative word in writing, the readers think they have been blamed. It will affect with doing business in next chance, so the business writers should avoid negative terms and try to select the words that make the readers feel they do not make something wrongly. The writers have to use the words that are soft and polite. For example, if the writers want to write ‘ we cannot accept your proposal”, they should write in positive way as “your proposal will be accepted if you give us further information.”
In the other hand, if you do not use understanding of the characteristics of business language, it will make some problem in writing for your readers and your running business. For example, if the writers do not write message with conciseness, the readers will lose time and be confused in the message. If the readers do not understand in them, they will not be able to write as like professional writer. They also may be looked down by other organizations that the writer cannot write as a professional writer. Misunderstanding of the characteristics of business language affect to image of the organization and relationship in an investment for future.
In conclusion, the business writers should understand in four kinds of characteristics of business. If you understand them, they are helpful for your professional and business writing. Conciseness, completeness, effectiveness, and positive ness which are main factors that make business language is helpful in your business writing and your doing business that relate to other people or other organizations. Four characteristics will be able to help your running business smoothly and successfully, so the business writers should learn and practice in these four characteristics of business language for adaptableness in business in business writing.

" Men's Society" in my Opinion

Different thinking of men’s society

What the topic that men often talk in friend’s society. When men join in it, they often talk on their activities that they do normally such as sport, game, hobby, car and music. For research, it is believed that only women like to talk on gossip, but it is not correct all. Men like to gossip no less than women. When men are in society especially their close friend, they often gather to talk and share idea together. It cannot be the other matter except women’s story. It is a common thing. Women’s story can make men feel excited every time that the topic begins. Men sometimes have to join in group of girlfriend’s friends. Men always add sweet words to their girlfriend. It does not mean they try to make their girlfriend embarrassed, but they want to build up relationship with their girlfriend’s friends because adding sweet words cause both two sides to correspond together. Next is about activity that men often do outside home. That is men’s party. They usually have party almost weeks. The place that they like to go is entertainment place such as pub, bar, and entertainment club. In the other hand, some men like to do outdoor activities such as playing sport; swimming, football, basketball, hiking, and racing.

Both of men and women have different society, but they should know how to “face to face” to each other. They need to learn and understand in opposite society. The important thing is both men and women have to divide time properly for living in society with happiness together.
